teafruitbat's video: Ryan Layne Whitney J S Bach Partita in E minor BWV 830 on Sperrhake clavichord

@Ryan Layne Whitney, J.S. Bach Partita in E minor, BWV 830, on Sperrhake clavichord
J.S. Bach: Partita in E minor, BWV 830, played on a Sperrhake clavichord by Ryan Layne Whitney. 1. Toccata (00:00) 2. Allemanda (07:24) 3. Corrente (10:35) 4. Air (14:54) 5. Sarabande (16:10) 6. Tempo di Gavotta (23:10) 7. Gigue (played in duple and triple time: see below) (25:27) The movements of this Partita were recorded in late summer of 2008, and I am re-uploading them here all in one video. I no longer own the Sperrhake clavichord. If I were to record it now (which I might one day, if I live long enough, on my Potvlieghe clavichord), I may or may not vary repeats, and some of my tempi would likely be slower, as I am older, and (sometimes for better, other times for worse) I am slowing down, too. The Gigue performance is a sort of experiment: In the 1st repeat of the 1st half, and in the 1st performance of the 2nd half, I have played this Gigue in triple time, leaving the outer sections in duple. Those who know this work are aware that Bach wrote the Gigue in duple time, and it is known that sometimes gigues in the Baroque era were written in duple, but played in triple (though Bach generally writes his gigues in triple time); there are other examples by Froberger, Kuhnau, etc. How one interprets the rhythm is not entirely clear, from what I have been able to ascertain, so nothing I have done here (especially in regard to the 16th notes) is definitive. (Some think I've done it entirely wrong, and such is life.) Probably one would choose to play the entire piece in either duple or triple, but for the sake of comparison I have combined the two in one performance. Besides, I can't really decide which I like better, though I lean toward duple, as written.
