Gjendebu is ideally located, at the western end of Lake Gjende, in the heart of the Jotunheimen range. It is DNT's oldest lodge, first built in 1871. Since then, it has been expanded and rebuilt many times, and now has 119 bunks and relatively modern facilities. It lies at an elevation of 995 m, just at timberline, with the verdigris green Lake Gjende at its doorstep, a profuse flora of more than 700 species, and peaks and glaciers in all directions.
