Dutch investors were quick to spot Kazakhstan’s outstanding business potential, and now the Netherlands is the country’s number one source of foreign direct investment. According to Astana-based Dirk Jan Kop, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dutch companies are involved in four main sectors in Kazakhstan, all ones in which Holland has developed exceptional expertise. These are oil and gas and related activities (including shipping and other logistics services), agriculture (including building and operating greenhouses), water management, and the fast-growing field of satellite-data use and applications. Along with its embassy in Astana, the Netherlands has established an economic division in Almaty and a consulate in Bishkek. Ambassador Kop says, “The Netherlands opened an embassy in Kazakhstan because of extensive Dutch business interests in this country. Foreign investors are looking for accountability and transparency, and these are the stated goals of Kazakhstan’s government, which is working night and day to transform these commitments on paper into a reality. The Netherlands will support the government’s efforts in any way that we can.”
