Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra of the SWR Conducted by Carl St.Clair Recorded April 2000 Liner Notes: Originally the Ouverture de l'Homme Tel formed part as the introductory piece to the Suite Suggestive written in Paris 1929 for soprano, baritone and orchestra, set to poems of Brazillian authors Oswold de Andrade, Manuel Bandeiro, and the French René Chalupt. There is a transcription for voice and piano. But it was in 1952 that Villa-Lobos rewrote the Ouverture for orchestra, which he premiered in Lisbon that same year. Both the original composition and this orchestral transcription were published by Max Eschig. Curiously, this work is strongly reminiscent of the Parisian modernistic, avant-garde style of the period. There is nothing here that can remind the listener of Villa-Lobos as the great representative of Brazilian musical nationalism.
