Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra of the SWR Conducted by Carl St.Clair Recorded April, 2000 Liner Notes: The New York Skyline Melody was originally written for piano in 1939 at Rio de Janeiro and the composer transcribed it for orchestra the same year. The melodic material for the work is based on Villa-Lobos's pedagogical method that he called millimetrization, consisting in projecting the contours of any skyline to graph paper and in applying specific successive tones to the lines. Here the source of the melody is indeed the profile of Manhattan with its tall skyscrapers, resulting in fairly large intervallic skips. This work represents one of the first examples of the application of that process. New York Skyline Melody, about three minutes in performance, consists of two almost identical sections mainly characterized by the texture of an accompanied melody.
