Is Delhi Full Statehood Justified? Dr. Kiran Bedi explains the Difficulties ( July 2015). Most new capitals around the world are administered as a Federal territory distinct from states. Beijing, Canberra, Washington DC, Ottawa and many other major capitals are examples of this organization. New Delhi was supposed to be just an administrative unit that is separate from its surrounding states. We need more and more of new capitals as an excuse to prevent our major cities from crumbling. Delhi was a beautiful city a century ago and now it is the most polluted and the most unsafest city in India, unable to handle all the pressures of being the most important city in its region. It does little to India's pride to have our national capital topping all the wrong lists. In short, instead of asking for a statehood for Delhi, ask for the Central government to be pushed out of Delhi. Once the Central government finds a home elsewhere, Delhi will be safer, less congested and can enjoy all the rights
