Heavy rain and snow fell on the Pacific coast and elsewhere in California on Wednesday (February 26) as the storm is expected to move further down the coast bringing much needed water to the drought-hit state, forecasters said. The storm knocked down a number of trees which in turn knocked out power in the San Francisco bay area, as wind blasts hit up to 45-miles-an-hour (72 Km/h). A stronger storm is expected on Friday morning (February 28) and should fall through the afternoon bringing possible thunder, the National Weather Service said, Two to four inches of rain may fall in the foothills and in areas at and above 5,000 feet (1,524 Km) one to two feet (300 -600 mm) of fresh snow is expected in some resorts. "Really wet. The snow is not that bad but you get soaked," said snowborder Josh Patten As for the the rest of the country, a recent stint of warm days and sunshine in the U.S. Midwest and Northeast was short-lived, as forecasters predicted an extended stretch of bitter cold and snow reaching well into March. The wintry conditions were likely to take a firm hold on Thursday in the Midwest and move eastward over the weekend, meteorologists said. The Midwest and Northeast have seen a string of powerful storms this winter that have stretched salt supplies and clean-up budgets to the limit. Spring officially begins on March 20.
