Revellers in New Orleans, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama celebrated carnivals ahead of Mardi Gras with parades on Thursday (February 27). Giant floats and parties were expected to attract thousands of people to New Orleans and its historic French Quarter as well as Mobile, Alabama. The Babylon, Muses and Chaos parades featured floats filled with masked riders and marching bands and dancers practised their struts in New Orleans - the city which claims to be host to the oldest yearly Mardi Gras festival in the United States. Mardi Gras, technically refers to Fat Tuesday (March 4), the final day of the weeks-long carnival season. It is devoted to frivolity and partying in the final hours before Ash Wednesday, which begins the Lenten season of sacrifice in the Catholic Church.
