I am a big sucker for this ragam! That explains why I am foolish enough to attempt such impossible songs. These songs cannot be categorised as regular songs. These are tailor made epics to suit a given sequence of narration, therefore they go through multiple movements. They are invariably a tremendous teamwork. A holistic product of Director, Composer and Lyricist. They plan its journey together and travel through those abstract spaces while remembering to stay firmly grounded to the base theme. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody or Ilaiyaraaja's Rakkama Kaiya Thattu... you get the picture. In the new millennium, such works are simply not produced anymore!! :-( This song is a kaleidoscope too. Typical novelty that can be seen in Bharati Raja's picturisation.. Striking lyrics.. Blemish-less vocals of SPB and Chitra (The latter being my favourite in this song).. Speaking of lyrics, some of Vairamuthu's finest works have come in a Bharati Raja movie. Ayiram thamari mottukkale, Ponmaalai pozhuthu etc., to name a few.. This song deserves to be in that list.. "கொல்லை துளசி எல்லை கடந்தால் வேதம் சொன்ன சட்டங்கள் விட்டுவிடுமா.." Its not too adacious to imagine a petit Amala to be கொல்லை துளசி :-) ... Actors contribution in this song cannot be overstated! Finally coming to the music - Of all songs, Devendran, the music director picked this one to make his mark. And he successfully relegates everyone else behind and easily takes charge as the captain. His cautious exploration of hidden scales within Shanmugapriya (only second person I have seen doing this after Ilaiyaraaja) speaks of his quality. So is his belief to back himself in coming up with such lengthy preludes and interludes. I would particularly rate the first interlude of this song very highly, for its myriad of movements, instrumentation and arrangement. Its a dubious surprise that Devendran's career never really took off. But then having composed a song like this, he should have no further regrets. Happy weekend !
