My circumstances today mean I prefer the TCR though I still harbour a lot of respect for the very capable Golf R and I was prepared to give it the win if stacked up. I don't want to bring magazine reviews into this as they don't influence my verdict but please bear in mind that the highly respected chaps at evo magazine rate the TCR more highly than the R. The outcome has a lot to do with the tyres fitted but the R is as per factory spec and how many owners would have taken delivery of it. The TCR was on Goodyear F1s which are OEM for Golf 8 GTI, it would have left the factory on Bridgestones (18") or P Zero (19") (or semi-slick Michelin Cup 2), but definitely not Continental. Likewise the TCR Is DCC and this is representative of a lot of the TCRs that were sold as you couldn't order 19s without it. Barely any Rs have got DCC though many are on 19s. Yes it would ride more comfortably on 18s but it would be knocked back on looks more than you'd gain in comfort. So again I feel the R is representative of a typical used R which is all you can get now the order books are shut. Find out which one I crowned the best hot hatch in the video!
