Directed by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, written by Catherine Léger, based on a novel by Geneviève Pettersen, with Kelly Depeault, Caroline Néron and Normand D’Amour. When this film was theatrically released in Quebec at the end of September, it quickly rose to the number one spot at the box office, only to have its release truncated by the closure of Quebec cinemas in the second week of October. Yet another astutely observed coming-of-age story (see WFF18 Borsos Award winner UNE COLONIE) set in the 90s around the rise of grunge music, the film follows Catherine (Kelly Depeault), a sixteen-year-old in rural Quebec, whose parents are getting a divorce and who seems to be entering her rebellious stage. It is a familiar story that the province’s filmmakers seem to have mastered as a film genre. She is a shy high-school girl who is sometimes bullied by those around her. Hanging around with friends in shopping mall parking lots and abandoned shacks, she starts experimenting with mescaline and sex. Even when tragedy strikes within her ranks, the spiral of self-indulgence she has allowed herself to drift into will be hard to break. Depeault is simply unforgettable in the lead role.
