Written and directed by Edson Oda, with Winston Duke, Bill Skarsgard, Tony Hale. A truly original, haunting film that might remind some viewers of Hirokazu’s Koreeda’s masterpiece AFTER LIFE (1998). Will (Winston Duke) spends his days monitoring tv signals until someone passes away, making for an opening for a new life on earth. Will has nine days in which to interview unborn souls, in order to decide who would be most suited to taking on an earthly assignment. Unlike most of the souls he interviews, Will knows whereof he speaks, as he is a rare soul that has actually lived a life previously. A lively interviewee (Zazie Beetz) turns the tables on him and gets him to question his own troubled past. But all of the characters bring their own gravitas and personalities to the interviews. Tony Hale (also in this year’s entry EAT WHEATIES!) makes for a rather neurotic and insecure candidate, and Bill Skarsgard’s character simply has an attitude. A profound, thought-provoking film.
