@MUSIC ON THE RADIO: 1950s SELECTION (No. 9)
Here are two popular tunes heard often on the radio in the 1950s, and well into the 1960s, accompanied by London street scenes from 1951. They are all well written by respected and accomplished composers. “Belle Of The Ball” first appeared in 1951, but this version was conducted by the composer himself and recorded in stereo in 1959. “Little Suite – March” was used as the theme for the BBC TV series, “Dr. Finlay’s Casebook”, set in rural Scotland, and is most well known for this. It was, however written with an English village and countryside setting in mind. In this respect, one can easily imagine a Margaret Rutherford type character ‘marching’ down the village high street about to confront some unfortunate person. Title: Composer. Date Released: 1. "Belle Of The Ball”. Leroy Anderson (1908-1975). 1951. 2. “Little Suite – March”. Trevor Duncan (1924-2005). 1959.
