This video is a tribute to the hybridized "lucharesu" brand of pro-wrestling that developed in Japan in the 1990s. Combining the highflying and color of Mexican lucha libre with the physicality and psychology of Japanese puroresu, the style began gaining ground in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1990, Universal became the first Japanese lucha libre group. It was succeeded by Michinoku Pro, a regional group with an exceptional roster. The success of M-Pro led other companies to bring in more luchadors and coincided with the first J*Cup tournament in 1994. The "Junior Heavyweight" scene exploded with talent in the last half of 1990s across Japan. One of its greatest successes, Ultimo Dragon, trained talent and opened a company of his own, Toryumon, in the late 90s. This group grew and eventually transformed into Dragon Gate. It is a now a distinct style that is interwoven in the Japanese pro-wrestling styles. The opening part reel is the Great Sasuke vs. Ultimo Dragon in the finals of the historic J-Crown tournament.
