I do sometimes wonder about how pointless I actually might appear to be. I sometimes feel like a bit of a sort of pimp in the middle of this not always meaningful endeavour, you know, the constant need to have the latest thing. The reality is that wherever you sit on technological curve, whether you're a Luddite or you're early adopter, you can't deny that, you know, if something awful happens it's gonna be technology that ultimately saves your life. Some of the big questions about our planet and about energy, it’s technology and obviously it’s big brother science that are going to answer those questions. So while it might seem trivial - my face on an iPad, you know, gliding into the room here at Lords, in the long room, it is meant to be fun and a bit of a joke. But, that technology, that telepresent robotic technology - could delivery a highly qualified consultant doctor to a village in the middle of nowhere, to give a prognosis or a diagnosis that would otherwise be impossible for the local doctor to give. Or it could be that machine that brings a brilliant mind into a classroom in a far flung country that doesn't have access to those sorts of teaching resources. So you can see there are some really interesting sort of philosophical gains that technology offers us -- practical, practical gains as well.
