Cyclone Jasper is continuing its gradual march towards the north Queensland coast. The main area of concern is from Mackay and Cooktown — including Cairns and Townsville — although the exact path of Jasper and when it will reach Queensland remains uncertain. State Disaster Coordinator Acting Deputy Commissioner Shane Chelepy said there would be a meeting today to discuss managing potential evacuation centres ahead of any flooding. "From Mackay, all the way through to Cairns, I've personally engaged now with all of our district disaster coordinators, our local disaster coordinators, and preparations are well underway in those areas," he said. Where is Cyclone Jasper going to hit? The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said Cyclone Jasper had "the potential to make landfall in the areas between Cooktown and Townsville". BOM's Dave Grant said a tropical cyclone watch alert may be issued "as early as Sunday" but would be "highly dependant on the movement and development" of the weather system, with landfall currently predicted for mid-next week.
