@Windows Weekly 137: Stick A Fork In It. It's Done
http://wiki.twit.tv/wiki/This_Week_in_Computer_Hardware_50 Topics Introducing SuperSite Mailbag * Inspired by Jerry Pournelle's "The Mailbag". * This will be on located on WinSuperSite.com and updated every Sunday. [edit] A new "Everything Must Go" coming in early 2010 * I need to pick a time when I'm not traveling for a few weeks, but hopefully before the end of February A look back at 2009: The top topics of the year * The rise of Google - Face it, Microsoft is the next IBM and Google is the next Microsoft unless something dramatic happens in 2010. Google dominates search and advertising, but it's best products are Gmail, Calendar, Voice, and Chrome. And they're just getting started. * Big new Microsoft releases - A good year for some Microsoft products, including Windows 7, Office 2010 (Beta), Bing * Bad new Microsoft releases - A bad year for some Microsoft products, including Windows Mobile, Zune HD (even though it's excellent) * Microsoft and the EU - After years of stupidity and millions in fines, it's over. * Cloud computing and how it's changing the way we work with technology - It's not just a new name for an old thing. It's a new way of doing things. Mobility + pervasive Internet is the key. * Is PC gaming doomed? - Rarely have I gotten more mail about a single topic. It's controversial. I think FPS is dead (or at least dying) on the PC. Other types of games (MMOG) will live on. * Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - The biggest entertainment release in history Looking ahead to 2010: Some things to look forward to * Windows Mobile 7 - It's make or break time. Or is it already too late? * Windows Live Wave 4 - We haven't heard from these guys in a while. Expect ribbonized versions of the Essentials apps in 2010. * Office 2010 - Mostly minor upgrades for the core apps (except Outlook), but it's looking rock solid already. * Xbox 360 Project Natal - Will Microsoft's vaporware controller ever ship? * Windows 7 SP1 - Due in October 2010, will it come with any new features? * An Apple tablet - It's coming. But what is it? And will it actually make a difference? * Netbooks vs. Smartbooks vs. Notebooks - Mobile computing will only get more popular. But so will very cheap mobile computing. [edit] Paul's favorite Audible book, tip, and software pick of 2009 Image:audibledotcom.png Nightmares & Dreamscapes, Volumes I, II and III by Stephen King (UNABRIDGED) Narrated by Various People * Tip: Save money online with Invisible Hand for IE, Chrome or Firefox; successfully clean install Windows 7 with Upgrade media every single time. * Software pick: Microsoft Security Essentials; LastPass Tip of the Week * Create multiple Explorer shortcuts on the Windows 7 taskbar o Create a shortcut to the desired folder, then go to its properties. In the target field, just add the word "explorer" (no quotes) before the folder path. The shortcut's icon will by default change to the Windows Explorer icon, but it can of course be changed to whatever the user wants. Then pin this shortcut to the taskbar. You can do this repeatedly. Thanks to Keith Ropp for the tip. ] Software Pick of the Week * Win7 Library Tool - This is genius: It lets you add NAS locations to your Windows 7 Libraries. * Thanks to Lars-Eivind Bjørtvedt
