Justices of the Constitutional Court have been providing constitutional interpretations for nearly seventy years, but oral arguments have only ever been heard in nine cases. The fact that oral arguments were used in this case shows how special it was. Under the existing Civil Code, two persons of the same sex are unable to enter into a legal marriage. Chi and the Taipei City Government believed that this violates the constitution, prompting them to request a constitutional interpretation. After two months of arguments, the court's justices released their interpretation on May 24.
