Persepolis는 이란의 고도 Shiraz에서 70km 북쪽에 위치한 2500년전의 Achaemenid 왕조의 왕궁의 유적지다. 이란에서는 Takht-e Jamshid라고 불려지는 Persepolis는 1930년대 프랑스의 고고학자 Andre Godard에 의거 고고학 발굴되었으며 기원전 6세기의 유물들이 발견되었다. Persepolis는 기원전 6세기 Achaemenid 왕조의 Cyrus 대왕이 터를 잡고 공사를 시작하여, Darius 대왕, Xerxes 대왕이 일차로 Apanda 궁전과 만국의 문을 완성하였으며 왕조가 망할 때까지 계속 여러 궁전을 확장하였다. 그 후 기원전 330년 Alexandro 대왕이 Persia를 침공하여 Persepolis를 점령한 후 150년전 Persia의 2차 그리스 침공에서 Xerxes왕이 그리스의 아테네를 불태운 것의 보복으로 불을 질러 파괴하였다고 한다.
