By: Rob Quijano Yesterday, I travelled to the beautiful mountains of Barrio Cuchilla in Morovis, Puerto Rico and made my way to Coliseo Gallistica de Morovis (a “Gallera” or hall for Cock-fighting, very popular in Puerto Rico) for an event created to help gather funds for Boxer Prichard Colon. Prichard, 23 years of age has been in a coma since his last bout 10/17/15 against Terrel Williams at the Eaglebank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. Prichard was undefeated going into that fight but lost the fight due to disqualification (his corner removed his gloves assuming the fight had concluded but one round remained). Prichard received numerous blows to the back of his head during that fight (“Rabbit punches”) and after the fight was rushed to the hospital due to dizziness. It was discovered that Prichard had a brain bleed and has been in a coma ever since. Efforts to raise funds for Prichard’s family have been ongoing and former World Champion Felix Tito Trinidad has been instrumental in multiple events here. Upon arrival, I met with the Tossas Rosario family (owners of the establishment) and David Cupey, who was in charge of the event’s promotions. It was explained to me that all proceeds from the entry tickets would be given to Prichard’s family. On normal fight days the entry ticket prices are as follows: Ringside $20, 2nd Level $12, and General Admission $9. During special event days such as yesterday, the prices are as follows: Ringside $25, 2nd Level $15, and General Admission $9. Although I do not gamble or even watch the fights, I did my part with a ringside ticket. Along with several attendees, I awaited the arrival of Tito. Tito arrived and was immediately bombarded with fans asking for pictures. Tito saw me, gave me a hug and greeted me. I’ve known Tito personally as a friend for about 15 years now and every time I see him, he never changes. He is always one with his people. Tito is always willing to go above and beyond to make his fans happy and to help with multiple charities. Since there were so many people, I asked Tito if he had time for a brief interview and he said absolutely. I began the interview and quickly pointed out that my editor, Carlos Suarez sends his greetings. I told Tito that I understand that he knows Prichard since he was a child and asked how this situation has affected him. The interview was conducted completely in Spanish and here is the translation. Tito began by greeting those on our page, everyone in boxing, and all of Puerto Rico. Tito stated, “I know Prichard by way of his father Richard who was also a fighter for my father. Prichard since he was small started coming to the gym and I used to see him all the time in Cupey, where I’ve lived all my life. It’s affected me as a Puerto Rican, as a friend, a brother, a Boricua of heart. I was able to see him in Atlanta. I went to the hospital…to see the state he’s in. Bedridden. His eyes were open and Thank God, he’s breathing on his own. He looked lost, slow, and his arms were in casts. They were in casts so he wouldn’t mess up and put his hands in his mouth. Truthfully it affects me a lot to see him like that because…a human being, humble, and with the talent he has…that he had in all his capacity. Undefeated. He lost being undefeated against the American that hit him in the back (pointing to his head), back of the brain. He was undefeated that day, I think it was his 16th fight (actually 17th) but in God we trust. That day we were in the hospital…my mother, me and my sister praying for him…asking God to get him out of there from then on.” I mentioned to Tito that this was the second time we’ve found each other in a “Gallera” where they were trying to raise funds for Prichard. I asked Tito how it made him feel to see the support of the people. Tito responded, “Well yes in the day of today, I know it’s a little late to invite people when this interview will come out but yes, in the day of today, we’re raising funds. A 6th of April raising funds and all of the funds are for Prichard…and we hope that there are other occasions to help because the costs are substantial in this recuperation for Prichard.” READ MORE HERE:http://wp.me/p3Mxn4-1Fl
