Why are property taxes such an important issue? The analyses of Professor Chris Berry have helped to shed a light on deeply unfair systems in the cities of Chicago and Detroit. In Detroit, he found that the lowest valued 10% of homes were recently assessed at more than 4 times the rates of the 10% of highest valued homes – a truly disturbing disparity This not only placed an unfair burden on the city’s most vulnerable residents but contributed to a foreclosure crisis as well.
