Undefeated 20 year old future legend Roberto Duran aka “Hands of Stone” takes on veteran Hiroshi “Royal” Kobayashi in the toughest test of his young career in his hometown of Panama City. Prefight records; Duran 25(22)-0, Kobayashi 61(10)-9-4. Entering the fight, Hiroshi who was the former WBA & WBC Super Featherweight Champion had defeated the likes of Katsutoshi Aoki, Jaime Valladares, Ricardo Arredondo, Carlos Ruben Canete, Shozo Saijo, Yoshiaki Numata & Antonio Amaya (2x) while Roberto had a notable win over Ernesto Marcel. From the start, Duran was the aggressor and had the upper hand in most exchanges with the use of his renowned feints and ripping combinations to the body and head against the gutsy Kobayashi who had his moments, but was largely unable to tame the young Panamanian lion who showed unstoppable hunger for blood. After delivering a royal beatdown to Hiroshi for 18 grueling minutes, Roberto unleashed a vicious 3 punch combo to put his opponent down and out in round 7. Kobayashi proceeded to hang up his gloves following the loss with a final record of 61(40)-10-4. As for Roberto Duran, he went on to defeat Ken Buchanan via TKO13 in June 1972 to become the new WBA Lightweight Champion where he began to cement his legacy to become one of the Greatest Lightweights of All Time and the Greatest Panamanian Fighter Ever. In July 2001, he fought his last fight and retired at 50 years of age with a record of 103(70)-16 after requiring life saving surgery due to a car crash. In his illustrious career which lasted 33 years and spanned across 4 different decades, he won world titles in 4 different weight divisions; Lightweight, Welterweight, Light Middleweight & Middleweight where he defeated a long list of top fighters such as Saoul Mamby, Juan Carlos Gimenez, Vilomar Fernandez, Emiliano Villa, Leoncio Ortiz, Monroe Brooks, Luigi Minchillo, Ray Lampkin, Angel Robinson Garcia, Guts Ishimatsu, Hector Thompson, Hiroshi Kobayashi, Carlos Palomino, Ken Buchanan, Davey Moore, Ernesto Marcel, Sugar Ray Leonard, Iran Barkley, Jorge Fernando Castro, Edwin Viruet (2x) & Esteban De Jesus (2x). Hope you guys enjoy this simple highlight of one of my favorite fighters of all time and be sure to SUBSCRIBE! Always, always keep your punches up.
