@Legend of Badang at National Day Parade NDP 2016 (Badang & the Singapore stone)
This video is about the legend of Badang, a folk hero - "Introducing the mighty Singapore hero - Badang". The video consist of 2 parts. The first is a cartoon version and the other is rousing re-enactment of this story by the dazzling portrayal of a local legendary folk hero played by actor Rizman Putra Ahmad Ali at the National Day Parade on Aug 9 2016. Giant suspended props and aerialists dazzled the audience, who were awed by a gripping re-enactment of the Singapore Stone legend. The National Day re-enactment by Rizman Putra Ahmad Ali saw him flying over an army of enemies - 600 warriors brandishing bamboo poles, shields and fire torches in battle scenes. The segment was shown during a recap of Singapore's colourful history. Now, many Singaporeans know that they have a heroic abang called Badang. It was the first time that they learned about Singapore's version of Hercules and the huge rock that he reportedly tossed into the mouth of the Singapore River eons ago, according to Malay folklore. Bringing the worlds of myth and reality together is a stone fragment called the Singapore Stone that has been on display at the National Museum of Singapore after it was declared a historic relic. Apparently, the fragment came from a larger rock which once stood at the Fullerton Hotel site. It was blasted into bits by one ignorant British engineer in the 19th century, who ordered workers to use the debris to pave a trail to Fort Canning Hill. The depiction of the Badang story at Singapore's 51st birthday celebrations saw the National Stadium crowd howl in approval as Rizman smashed through a huge 'rock' while soaring through the air. He had an old fish trap that he set every chance he could in the nearby river to catch fish. One day, Bandang discovered only bones in his net. Determined to catch the culprit, Badang cast his net again and hid behind some tall grass till the identity of the thief was revealed; a strange looking spectre. Badang fearlessly confronted the spectre, who begged to be let go, promising to grant Badang any wish he wanted. Taking this chance, Badang wished to be stronger than any man. The spectre agreed on one condition – Badang had to eat up what the spectre threw up. True to the spectre's words, after Badang had fulfilled the task, he was able to uproot a tree effortlessly. Badang let the spectre go, and returned to his master. Back in the village, Badang's use of his newfound strength at work amazed his master and other villagers. It was not long before the King of ancient Singapore, Sri Rama Wira Kerma, heard about Badang and summoned him to his court, appointing him as a court warrior. There, Badang's fame went beyond to as far as India. Not to be outdone, the ruler of India sent the kingdom's strongest man, Wadi Bijaya, to Singapura for a duel with Badang. A series of matches tested the two men's strength, all of which showed Badang to be the stronger of the two. A final test, a rock throwing contest, was agreed upon to put all doubts to rest. While Wadi Bijaya could only lift the enormous rock up to his knees, Badang lifted it up over his head and flung it into the sea where it landed near the mouth of Sungai Singapura (Singapore River). This huge stone, later blown up to pieces in 1843 by British Acting Settlement Engineer, Captain Stevenson, came to be known as the Singapore Stone.
