@Trump's EPA Re-Approves Cyanide Bombs to Protect Animal Agriculture
8/9/19, the Environmental Protection Agency reapproved the use of ‘cyanide bombs’ to kill predators such as coyotes and foxes in an effort to protect the livestock of private farmers. The bombs, known as M-44s, are bait-disguised traps that spray sodium cyanide into an animal’s mouth upon biting down. M-44s are mostly used by Wildlife Services, a federal agency that kills thousands of wild animals each year to protect farmers’ livestock. According to their website, the agency was created “to provide Federal leadership and expertise to resolve wildlife conflicts to allow people and wildlife to coexist.” Last year, the agency killed about 6,500 wild animals using the bombs. More than 200 were untargeted. Conservation and environmental advocacy groups have been calling for a complete ban of sodium cyanide across the country. Many have argued that there are safer methods of eradication that don’t kill untargeted animals, with multiple pet dogs having been killed by the bombs in the past. This extends to unintended human victims. The EPA announced some restrictions on the bomb within the reapproval, including that they cannot be installed within 100 feet of a public road, double the previous restriction of 50 feet. Installations must be accompanied by warning signs within 15 feet of the device, a decrease from the previous 25 feet. However, according to the Center for Biological Diversity’s statement released on Wednesday, ‘none of the restrictions will prevent killing of nontarget wildlife.’ The Center, a leading opponent of M-44s, attacked the decision in their statement, highlighting the thousands of animal deaths the bombs have caused.
