SOFIA Telescope's video: SOFIA s Airborne Astronomy Legacy

@SOFIA's Airborne Astronomy Legacy
NASA Ames Associate Center Director Deborah Feng discuss NASA Ames Research Center's role in SOFIA and its legacy of airborne astronomy. SOFIA's predecessor the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) was based at NASA Ames from 1975 to 1995. NASA Ames now hosts the SOFIA Science Center. Many partnerships contribute to SOFIA's success every day and during its first Southern Deployment to New Zealand. SOFIA's partners include NASA and DLR; NASA Ames Research Center and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center; USRA and DSI. SOFIA is the largest airborne observatory in the world, studying the universe at infrared wavelengths, capable of making observations that are impossible for even the largest and highest ground-based telescopes. During its planned 20 year lifetime, SOFIA also will inspire the development of new scientific instrumentation and foster the education of young scientists and engineers.
