We need “Direct and Indirect Speech” when we need to “report” what someone else has said to another person. For example you are going to the college and for that you go to your friend Umer’s home so you can take him with you. But when you reach his home, He says to you, “I am not going to college today because I am ill.” Now when you reach your college and your teacher asks you about your friend Umer that why he is not with you, you need to tell your teacher what he said to you when you went his home. Now you have two options, ether you repeat the exact words of your friend or you covey his message in your own words. If you want to repeat the exact words he said you would say to your teacher: Umer said to me, “ I am not going to college today because I am ill.” This is called Direct Speech. But if you don’t want to use the exact words your friends used, you can say: Umer told me that he was not going to college today because he was ill. This is called Indirect Speech. Now to learn Direct and Indirect Speech, you must know some basic things, otherwise you would not be able to understand the rules and regulations of Direct and Indirect Speech. 1: Personal Pronoun: If you want to learn Direct and Indirect Speech, you must have good command over the use of Personal Pronoun. You may be thinking why? What is the link of Personal Pronoun with Direct and Indirect Speech? To understand this, once again see the sentence above by you to your teacher. Direct Speech: Umer said to me, “I am not going to college today because I am ill.” Indirect Speech: Umer told me that he was not going to college because he was ill. You can observe that in second, Indirect Speech, sentence we have used “he” in place of “I”. So now how “I” changed into “he”????? , to understand this thing and the rules and regulations about the changes in the personal pronoun when I sentence is converted from Direct Speech to Indirect Speech, you must have grip over the use of Personal Pronoun. 2: The Kinds of Sentence: The Kinds of Sentence is the second thing that you need to have command over to understand Direct and Indirect Narration. The reason is that in Direct and Indirect Narration, you have to change a sentence of any of the 5 kinds into Indirect Speech from the Direct Speech. So it is obvious that if you have no grip over the kinds of sentences, you would not be able to change it from Direct Speech into Indirect Speech. 3:Tenses (Active and Passive Voice) : If you are going to learn Direct and Indirect Speech, you should first learn Active and Passive Voice, because you will have to change these sentences from Direct into Indirect Speech. 4: Basic Usages (At Least): To learn Direct and Indirect, you should know at least the basic usages, i.e. can, could, may, might, must, it, there, have to, keep on, about to and had better etc. After learning these things it would become a lot easy for you to understand Direct and Indirect Speech. So let’s begin.
