National Tree Week 2023 runs from 25 November to 5 December and is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration. The nationwide event encourages people across the country to plant thousands of new trees to mark the start of tree planting season. But why is it so important to plant trees? Recently I met up with Simon and Tracey West who run the charity Word Forest, an environmental and education charity based in the UK that works to combat the devastating effects of global warming and climate change by planting fast growing trees in the tropics. They explained to me the role of trees in the fight against climate change. Word Forest "was formed in April 2017 with the knowledge that the wellbeing of the planet and the wellbeing of the tree planting communities were intrinsically linked. The charity objects being to promote sustainable development with the preservation, conservation and the protection of the environment and the prudent use of resources. To also include the relief of poverty and the improvement of the conditions of life in socially and economically disadvantaged communities".
