"Change Of Address" may have had special resonance because it's about a middle-aged man (Arthur Kennedy) whose wife (Phyllis Thaxter) is threatening to leave him as he tries to recapture his lost youth. (Herrmann's own second wife, Lucy, had left him earlier in the year and, according to friends, he suffered the loss keenly.) Scored for 20 strings, oboe, harp and two horns, it is infused with sorrow from the opening passage, set against the California surf. Under the forlorn wife's dialogue ("that sound...the sea, it's so mournful, so lost and lonely - like death"), it is briefly reminiscent of the sea music in Herrmann's The Ghost And Mrs. Muir.
