@5 Things You Need To Know About The BMW Alpina XB7 - feat. Teagan McCombs | Automotive Affairs
In this video, Teagan McCombs will talk you through five interesting things about the BMW Alpina XB7 super SUV. Topic: 2021 BMW Alpina XB7 - A Performance SUV with Rolls-Royce Cullinan level of luxury - and perfect for The Grand Tour of any continent? Alpina has been in the business of making fast BMW models even faster since the mid-1960's, and their work is so good, BMW took notice and worked out a deal with them - so now you can walk into a BMW dealership in most parts of the world, and order an Alpina variant, and it'll be covered under warranty. But, are they any good? We've not been able to answer that in the past, because we never tested one, but we just recently spent a week with one, to see what an Alpina is all about! Styling: Let's begin with the looks of the Alpina XB7. This is a handsome SUV - and with 23 inch wheels and quad exhaust, this is a seriously impressive looking vehicle. A really cool design touch, is the floating Alpina badge in the front bumper - which is sitting in an aerodynamically optimized position - how cool is that! Score: 7/10. Interior: Step inside the XB7 and regardless of the seating row (and this is a 3 row SUV) you'll find impressive features, along with finishing in the finest materials. We're talking about premium leather, alcantara, and special wood trims - this truly is Rolls-Royce level of luxury. The gear selector is crystal, it has ambient lighting that you can configure to your liking, and not only do the front seat passengers get a screen to play with, so do the second-row seat passengers (although, this is an optional feature). Even the third-row passengers get their own personal sunroof and climate control switches. The front seats even featured configurable massage seats - now that's cool. Score: 8/10. Safety: All BMW models score very well in crash tests, and this 2,350 kg behemoth does, too, thanks to front and side impact airbags and even knee airbags. Plus, you get adaptive cruise control that keeps you also in your lane, and every other safety feature you can think of! Score: 9/10. Powertrain: Under the hood of the XB7 is a twin-scrool, twin-turbo, 4.4L V8 that produces 612 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque (no other model of the BMW X7 gets this engine). Power is fed to all-wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Score: 8/10. Performance: The Alpina XB7 can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in about 3.9 seconds, and top out at 290 km/h - making it one of the fastest SUVs on the planet! Score: 8/10. Driving Dynamics: This is a very competent vehicle. It can roll around comfortably at city speeds, and it is then just as much at home running quickly on the highway. In fact, it is happier at higher speeds - this XB7 is built for the Autobahn for sure! The suspension soaks up all the bumps with ease - this thing just glides - and thanks to a 5 stage variable ride height, it can even go over uneven terrain - if you have to! For a big behemoth, it handles well, but tight corners really aren't it's thing! Score: 7/10. Fuel Economy: You'd expect for such a vehicle to drink lots of premium fuel, and it does, but not as much as we expected! We averaged 13.5 L/100 km in our test cycle, and that's not bad. However, if you're mostly driving in the city, or in traffic jams, your consumption will go up dramatically! Score: 5/10. Pricing: This is a very expensive SUV - our XB7 tester would run you $180,000 plus dealer fees and taxes. You can say, it is half the price of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan - but when you factor in depreciation, the XB7 will be an expensive vehicle to own! Score: 2/10. Verdict: All in all, the 2021 Alpina XB7 is a wonderful vehicle for those looking for ultimate luxury and performance. It is out of the reach of many, but perhaps that's just part of the appeal! Total score: 54/80.
