Ferroequinology's video: Gyralight in the Night

@Gyralight in the Night
Filmed on March 22, 2020 When Mars Lights were first invented in the 1930's to make an approaching train more visible, they were said to look like a light from Mars. To me they still hold that same sense of fascination and wonder. I've been wanting to film a video like this for years. When I was a young kid, I saw a scene similar to what you see between 5:04 and 5:24 in the video, with the swirling beam reflecting off the sky from behind some trees as we drove along near the tracks. Well, on one evening in March, the weather happened to be just right. It was snowing hard enough to reflect the beam, but not so much that the light was blocked by it. What you see in the video is a slightly more recent (70's) version of the Mars Light, called a 'Gyralight'. Gyralights are roughly elliptical, while Mars Lights typically follow a more complicated lissajous pattern. Even so, Metra is the last major railroad that continues to use these, right here in Chicago where Mars Lights were first invented almost 90 years ago. Gyralights can still be found on the front of every Metra F40PH and cab car. _____________________________________________________________ YouTube is sometimes automatically playing videos at a lower resolution because of extra demand due to the coronavirus.
