10 People That Can Actually Breathe Underwater Breathing underwater. Wowowow! We’re already impressed, right? But how can these people do it for so long? Well, it seems kinda unrealistic, doesn’t it? In fact, science would tell us that humans cannot breathe underwater because their lungs do not have enough surface area to absorb enough oxygen from water. Additionally, the lining in a human’s lungs is adapted to handle air rather than water. However, there have been experiments with humans breathing other liquids, like fluorocarbons. And we’re just so excited for you to meet them, so let’s go and see who they are! Number 10: At the tenth spot, we’re taking a look at King Neptune. King Neptune was god of the sea according to Roman mythology. In fact, King Neptune was the god of freshwater, which is something very interesting, considering he was said to reside under the ocean, which is actually salty. It was not until 400 B.C. when he started to become identified with King Poseidon from Greek mythology, thus dubbed the role of “God of the Sea.” It is also said that he was very similar to the Ancient Greek god known as Poseidon. He had two brothers. The first being Jupiter, the god of the sky and also the chief of the Roman gods, and then there was Pluto, the Roman god of the dead. King Neptune was most often shown carrying a trident, and this is a three-pronged spear used for hunting fish. And this takes our number 10 placement in the countdown for people that can actually breathe underwater. Mythical, perhaps? Real? Some say yes! Number 9: At spot 9, we’re totally going mythical again here. You know the Little Mermaid, right? Well, we’re here to show you the very beautiful character of Ariel. And some believe she was a real being. Fact or fantasy, you tell us, we’d love to hear your comments down below. So who was she, or who is she? For many of you who believe in magic or mythology, Ariel is the youngest of King Triton and Queen Athena's seven daughters. In The Little Mermaid movie she is seen as being willing to do anything to be with the wonderful Prince Eric, even giving up her own voice to become a human being. She is also described as a typical teenager, prone to making errors of judgment. Some adults do this too, haha! In the well-loved movie, Ariel is a fictional character of Walt Disney Pictures' 28th animated film (from 1989). It was the 28th Disney animated feature film and the first film within The Little Mermaid franchise, and loosely based on the Danish fairy tale (having the same name) by Hans Christian Andersen. And this takes our number 9 spot in the countdown for 10 people that can actually breathe underwater. Aww, Ariel is so beautiful? And she might be real, especially if you believe in fairy tales and magic! Number 8: At the eighth spot, we’re going to take a look at a real-life human now. This gorgeous little girl is said to be able to breathe underwater. We’ll show you how miraculous she looks. Elizabeth started swimming at the age of just 2 years. Have you seen this movie? It’s definitely a popular one, and Jason’s character is strong as anything, and can literally breathe underwater. Aquaman is a fictional superhero, appearing in American comic books, first published by DC Comics. They were created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, where the character debuted in More Fun Comics . Initially it was a backup feature in DC's anthology titles, where Aquaman later-on starred in several volumes of a solo series.
